Coming In July/August 2014: Keith Haring – Pieces Of A Life

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SkyPilot Theatre Company
Present a workshop production of
KEITH HARING: PIECES OF A LIFE
By Greg Machlin
Directed by Doug Oliphant

1980s phenomenon pop artist Keith Haring has a problem. Make that two problems. 1) He’s in a coma in February 1990, about to die. 2) The Man Who Knows Things and The Woman Who Knows (two beings that may or may not be gods) say his art’s going to kill lots of people—unless he travels back to key points in his own life and agrees to destroy it. The horrible thing is, they might be right…

As Keith races through a whirlwind of own life (constantly pursued by the mysterious Man and Woman), he and his friends—mercurial Basquiat, loyal Kenny Scharf, savvy Madonna, and enigmatic Andy Warhol— wrestle with the big questions: What does it mean to pursue a life in art? Can you ever find a balance between making your art and being happy? What do the Man and Woman really want? And how do you stop them?

Greg Machlin, the award-winning writer of Seven Days: A Fantasia on the Life of Miles Davis, Doug Oliphant, director behind the critically acclaimed RITE OF SEYMOUR by Allison Volk and SkyPilot Theatre, the company that brought you KONG: A GODDAMN 30-FOOT GORILLA by Adam Hahn, WARBRIDE by Samantha Macher and 4 MURDERS by Brett Neveu, bring you KEITH HARING: PIECES OF A LIFE.

Coming Soon: CHRISTMAS 2

SkyPilot Theatre Company

presents the World Premiere of

CHRISTMAS 2

written and directed by Jeff Goode

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to Bethlehem!

Jesus Christ was a child star who quickly faded into obscurity. And everyone involved in his Nativity saw their lives fall into ruin—from the Orient King who gave away all his gold, to the Talking Sheep who was forced to join a circus freak show, to the alcoholic Angel whose media blitz fell apart when the newborn king and his family fled into divine witness protection.  Now, 30 years after his birth, the Ghosts of Nativities Past converge on Bethlehem to teach Jesus Christ the true meaning of Christmas.

CHRISTMAS 2 is a hysterical World Premiere comedy by Jeff Goode, SkyPilot Theatre Company’s Senior Resident Playwright and the author of the smash hit Christmas play, THE EIGHT: REINDEER MONOLOGUES, which has had over 500 productions worldwide. He also penned SkyPilot’s 2011 critically acclaimed THE EMANCIPATION OF ALABASTER MCGILL and 2010′s YES SVETLANA, THERE IS A GRANDFATHER FROST. In 2014, SkyPilot will produce his new play FURSONA NON GRATA, the first ever full-length “Furry” play. For television, he created Disney’s AMERICAN DRAGON: JAKE LONG and is currently writing for LALAOOPSY for Nick Jr. For his complete bio and resume, go to www.jeffgoode.com.

KONG: A GODDAMN THIRTY-FOOT GORILLA – EXTENDED UNTIL DECEMBER 9!!!

“KONG: A GODDAMN THIRTY-FOOT GORILLA” by Adam Hahn

October 20 – November 25 DECEMBER 9
Buy Tickets Now!

In 1933, an expedition set out for the Indian Ocean, in hopes of creating the greatest film ever made. Instead, they brought back a giant captive gorilla. This was a terrible idea. KONG: A Goddamn Thirty-Foot Gorilla offers a retelling and deconstruction of the classic King Kong story, commentary on the 1933 film, audience participation, dinosaur fights, and a very large ape on a very small stage.

KONG is the fifth production of SkyPilot’s 2012 season; its second full season of exclusively producing new plays.

War Bride Extended to September 23rd!

With rave reviews and enthusiastic audiences, we are now EXTENDING THE WAR BRIDE RUN TO SEPTEMBER 23rd! Get your tickets here.

Here’s some of what the critics have to say about the show:

“Psychological thrills accompany T.U. Studios’ ‘War Bride’… Bigotry, paranoia and violence lurking beneath the frayed comforts of home and hearth roll out a less than hospitable welcome mat to the reluctant “War Bride” at the center of Samantha Macher’s new psychological drama from SkyPilot Theatre.”

“Macher’s storytelling remains taut and gripping throughout…Director-choreographer Nancy Dobbs Owen furthers the mounting dread with a Butoh-inspired chorus of writhing ghosts depicting Yumi’s inner torment…” – LA TIMES

War Bride

“WAR BRIDE” by Samantha Macher

August 11 – September 16 EXTENDED to September 23rd!
Buy Tickets Now!

It is the fall of 1945. Private Alvin Rhodes is returning home to his mother Catherine in Merced, CA. He has an injury that he doesn’t want to discuss and a new wife, a Japanese nurse named Yumi. Yumi is greeted with suspicion and fear, even outright hatred. The bombs were dropped only two months prior and Japanese Americans are still unjustly interned at Manzinar, not far away. She is shy and withdrawn, but with the help of Catherine’s old friend Richard, a Japanese/English dictionary and 1000 paper cranes, her story is slowly revealed. WAR BRIDE combines sharp, witty dialogue with Japanese Butoh influenced contemporary dance to create a completely new play that will tear at your heart while challenging your ideas of right and wrong.

WAR BRIDE tells a compelling story from the point of view of the women: Catherine, Yumi, the neighborhood girls. Roles for women are far too few in American theater. We have also authentically cast both Japanese and American actors, filling a gap in the Asian acting community. Finally, the lessons of World War Two are relevant in a world where we still lock people up without a trial based upon irrational fears and prejudice.

WAR BRIDE is the fourth production of SkyPilot’s 2012 season; its second full season of exclusively producing new plays.
