AUDITIONS FOR FALL MAINSTAGE ONE-ACT DOUBLE BILL AUGUST 10TH

SkyPilot Theatre Company will be hosting auditions for a one-act play double bill: ABSENCE MAKES THE HEART by Sean Abley, directed by Chrisanne Blankenship, and COMB YOUR HAIR (OR YOU’LL LOOK LIKE A SLAVE) by Jalisa Leelee Jackson, directed by Kumi James on August 10th. The plays were¬†were both presented at the Kennedy Center as finalists for the John Cauble Short Play Award in 2017.

–25+ roles available, all ages, including 5-7 specifically for African-American women/womxn. SEE ROLES BELOW.

AUDITION TIMES: 3-5pm and 7-9pm.
These are open auditions-if you’d like to attend, please comment below with the timeframe you’ll be arriving, or just show up.

WHAT TO PREPARE:
For ABSENCE – a monologue from the show (read but not memorized acceptable) or 2 minute monologue. Script is available by request – email sean@playstoorder.com.
For COMB YOUR HAIR – a monologue from ABSENCE or a 2 minute monologue. You may be asked to read from the show.

–Cis, trans and gender nonconforming performers are strongly enouraged to audition.

SHOW DATES: Oct 6-29, Friday-Saturday 8pm, Sunday matinee. (12 performances total.)

***ABSENCE MAKES THE HEART:
Synopsis: If a dancer falls in the forest…The ripple effect caused by the disappearance of a ballet dancer, as told to us in monologues by those affected, near and far.

Roles:
AUDIENCE MEMBER – Supporting / MALE OR FEMALE / 40 TO 60
A person of a certain age who has just left a ballet performance. Art snob. Will consider cis, trans and gender nonconforming performers for this role.

BROTHER – Supporting / MALE / 18 TO 25
Brother of a missing girl. Rich, bitter, doesn’t like the missing girl.

CHOREOGRAPHER – Supporting / MALE OR FEMALE / 30 TO 50
Too old to dance professionally, now a university instructor. On drugs, but high functioning–they can handle their shit.

DORM RESIDENT ASSISTANT – Supporting / FEMALE / 18 TO 25
College student, maybe a bit of a partier.

DRUG DEALER – Supporting / MALE / 21 TO 30
Any age, probably young but looks older. Been in the game for awhile, but still makes rookie mistakes. Will consider cis, trans and gender nonconforming performers.

BIRTH MOTHER – Supporting / FEMALE / 30 TO 40
Mid 30s. A mom in search of information about the baby she gave up for adoption.

DETECTIVE – Supporting / MALE OR FEMALE / 45 TO 60
NYPD lifer. Quick to close a case based on their instincts. Will consider cis, trans and gender nonconforming performers for this role.

BOYFRIEND – Supporting / MALE / 18 TO 25
Early 20s, unremarkable in every way except for the fact he’s on drugs. Not an addict…yet. Will consider cis, trans and gender nonconforming performers for this role.

PLAYWRIGHT – Supporting / MALE OR FEMALE / 25 TO 50
Loves research, navel gazing and over thinking. Will consider cis, trans and gender nonconforming performers for this role.

EYEWITNESS – Supporting / MALE OR FEMALE / 30 TO 60
Actively courting alcoholism after witnessing something horrible. Will consider cis, trans and gender nonconforming performers for this role.

GIRLFRIEND – Supporting / FEMALE / 18 TO 25
Lesbian or bi or just into a girl occasionally.

MTA SUBWAY OPERATOR – Supporting / MALE OR FEMALE / 30 TO 60
From a part of Brooklyn that hasn’t been gentrified. Will consider cis, trans and gender nonconforming performers for this role.

BALLET STUDENT – Supporting / FEMALE / 18 TO 25
Self absorbed. A decent, but not amazing, dancer.

X-TREME BLOGGER – Supporting / MALE OR FEMALE / 18 TO 30
Predator, opportunist, prime example of privilege. Will consider cis, trans and gender nonconforming performers for this role.

CRIME SCENE CLEAN-UP JANITOR – Supporting / FEMALE / 40 TO 60
Immune to the horrors of death. Will consider cis, trans and gender nonconforming performers for this role.

MAGAZINE WRITER – Supporting / MALE OR FEMALE / 30 TO 50
Successful ,well put together, pragmatist. Will consider cis, trans and gender nonconforming performers for this role.

MOTHER-TO-BE – Supporting / FEMALE / 40 TO 55
Distraught woman unable to conceive.

PRIEST – Supporting / MALE / 40 TO 60
Has lost his faith in a violent way.

PHARMACIST – Supporting / MALE OR FEMALE / 30 TO 60
Just doing their job.

PROGRAM DIRECTOR – Supporting / MALE OR FEMALE / 25 TO 40
Good person dedicated to teaching children. Will consider cis, trans and gender nonconforming performers for this role.

Synopsis: Thirteen vignettes about black women/womxn’s experiences that are often overlooked but greatly impact the feelings they have about themselves and others as well as their mental and emotional wellbeing.
